James McMahan Family Cemetery
Fray Family Cemetery
Location: T-49-N; R-19-W; of Section: 27: northwest quarter of the
southeast quarter of the section.
About 1.2 mile north of Blackwater, Missouri on Route K; northeast of the
Blackwater River Bridge.
Within this cemetery are buried James and Helena McMahan, his wife. James
McMahan was one of the original settlers of Lamine Township. He came to
Cooper County, Missouri in 1811. He served in Captain S. Cooper's Militia
during the War of 1812. His wife was a daughter of David Jones, a
Revolutionary War soldier.
There are about five graves marked with rude limestone markers. The
cemetery is enclosed by a beautiful iron fence and on the gate is "R. J.
McMahan". This cemetery is in poor condition; many of the stones are broken.
The stones for James and Helena McMahan have been broken into three
sections. They originally stood about four feet high. Cattle are allowed to
roam over the cemetery.

There are unmarked graves and some illegible stones are inscribed with
initials as follows: "I. T. M."; "J. M. M."; "M. E. M."; "J. B. W."; "H. R.
M."; "J. N. M"; and "J. M." from a list recorded by Mrs. Lloyd Wolfe on
November 16, 1968.

68 years, 9 months, 1 day; daughter of David Jones; stone broken.
McMahan, James; died 07 Oct 1857; aged 68 years, 9 months; husband of
Helena nee' Jones McMahan.
McMahan, Jesse N.; died 21 Apr 1857; age 37 years, 9 months, 11 days.
